Our Finances

Please note that my only motivation in posting personal financial information is to help people in our same situation get an idea as to what different routes may cost. Unfortunately, finances can become a huge factor for some in how to build their family, so that is why this section is here. When we were deciding what to do, it helped me to see real life examples. So, this is not to elicit pity, pride, or anything else.

If you do proceed with an embryo transfer, know that some of your expenses may be able to be claimed on taxes. 


Our Embryo Adoption Finances (2013/2014):
First Cycle Expenses (Open Adoption of 7 Embryos- 2PN & Multicell):
$300- Application fee- paid to NEDC
$1200- Program fee- paid to NEDC
$520- Testing fees (consult, trial transfer, & SHG) - paid to NEDC
$300- Homestudy review fee- paid to National Fertility Support Center
$2,700- Open donor fee- paid to National Fertility Support Center
$3,525- Transfer fees including assisted hatching- paid to NEDC
$690- Cycle ultrasounds- $230/ea- paid to local RE/no insurance coverage
$190- Cycle bloodwork - $95/ea- paid to local RE/no insurance coverage
$255- Cycle medication- PIO, Lupron, generic estrace, oral progesterone, needles- paid to Apothecary by Design mail order pharmacy/very minimal insurance coverage
$50- Required STD testing- paid to lab/no insurance coverage
$162-Mock cycle bloodwork- paid to local hospital/no insurance coverage
$230- Mock cycle ultrasound- paid to local RE/no insurance coverage
$613-Embryo shipping/storage (pass down expenses)- paid to NEDC

$220- Endometrial biopsy (+ pregnancy test; did not send to lab for testing!!)

Subsequent Cycle #2 Expenses (Relinquished 2 multicells, open adoption of 6 blasts)

$186- Cycle medication (had a few things left over)
$1,600- Open donor fee (to add back up donor)
$220- Endometrial biopsy (+ pregnancy test; did not send to lab for testing!!)
$501- Embryo storage/shipping (pass down expense)
$930- Post transfer bloodwork (hcg free at employer, progesterone x4, estrogen x6)

$7237 (did submit claims to insurance for bloodwork since it was at out of network provider and was reimbursed around $200)

Plus traveling to Knoxville once (2 nights of hotel + gas to drive)- approx. $320

PLUS $400 to store embryos for one year from time of transfer (11/2015- will need to pay $400 again or relinquish embryos back to NEDC)

Our IUI Finances (2011/2012):
Set Up Fees ($845)
$100- Fertility clinic intake and bloodwork
$40 Ultrasound
$130 Counseling (one session is required by clinic if using a donor)
$410 Sperm storage fee
$165 Subscription to sperm bank (this let us read essentially basic information about donors... sperm banks are a racket!)

Monthly  ($1398)
$733.33 Sperm/shipping/washing ($2,200 for 3 month supply)
$9 Rx- clomid (Target has it on the $9 list, regardless of insurance coverage)
$110 Rx- HCG trigger shot (Walmart has it the cheapest; most insurances will not cover)
$446 IUI, TDI
$120 Ultrasounds (3 per cycle)

TOTAL FOR 3 CYCLES- $5,039
*This is with some insurance coverage for intake and ultrasounds. Luckily, the way our clinic billed, insurance covered part of those things. My insurance did not cover any of the medication, counseling, procedures, or anything to do with donor sperm.
